VILLAGE FIFER - Norris & Sawyer. Instructions for fifing and
a collection of marches, airs, etc. Published in Portsmouth, New Hampshire
in 1808. A large collection of fife tunes in 2 part harmony including
the Camp Duty. INSTRUCTOR
IN MARTIAL MUSIC - D. Hazeltine. The first known publication for
both fifes and drums in the United States. Contains verbal descriptions
of the rudiments and certain beats, plus a collection of fife tunes

A NEW, USEFUL AND COMPLETE SYSTEM OF DRUM BEATING - Charles Stewart
Ashworth. Published at Washington City in 1812. Drumming interpreted
in modem notification by George P. Carroll. An understanding of early
American and British fife and drum methodology cannot be had without
this work. MARTIAL
MUSIC OF CAMP DUPONT - George Blake. 1815. Scored for 1st, 2nd and
bass instruments and adaptable for fifes.
MASSACHUSETTS
COLLECTION OF MARTIAL MUSICK - Alvan Robinson Jr. Published in three
editions - 1818, 1819 and 1820. Drum parts are identical in all editions
but the fifing is different in each. Drumming interpreted by George
P. Carroll. Civil War ERA

DRUMMER'S STORY - By the same author as Drum Taps in Dixie, this
work was written as a grandfather's narrative of his war experiences.
Some anecdotes different than in "Drum Taps" are included,
as well as some of the same stories in greater detail. Contains vital
information for drum students of the period. ARMY
REGULATIONS FOR DRUM, FIFE & BUGLE - W. Nevins - A complete
manual giving all the calls for camp and field. Suitable music is added
for each instrument. Compiled by Drum Major William Nevins of General
McClellan's Body Guard and arranged by A.J.Vaas of the Light Guard Band,
at Chicago in 1846. It is unique in containing a number of bugle quicksteps
adaptable for use with drums and some easy fife tunes typical of the
period. The Ashworth drum notation is also included. THE
DRUM MAJOR - Tamplini's work of circa 1850 for the instruction of
the drummers of the British army. Contains the Camp Duty. THE
FIFE MAJOR - Same author as for the above but for fife only. Published
circa 1817 in London. SCHOTT'S
HANDBOOK FOR FIFE AND DRUM BANDS - Elementary instructions and 120
popular melodies of the mid -19th Century. English, Scotch, Duty and
field calls are adapted for amateur fife and drum bands. Published in
London circa 1860.

collection contains original decoded drum parts as well as some original
writing for bass and snare drum. Fife parts are from 18th and 19th Century
publications. Contains much material not in the "aural" tradition

with more music from the 19th Century. Some of the parts are scored
